Cordia Sea 's blog ::Whole Food Market Offering Five-Finger Discount
Nowadays, so many people are reevaluating what success means. About 2 years ago, it might have meant having a college degree and having a high paying job. As the economy got very bad and has worsened, it seems like keeping a roof over one's head and a job, any job, has been achieving success. How hard times can change the people... Many people are putting aside their career goals on hold for a moment and just concentrating on keeping a steady, well paying job. These days, that's a blessing to have these things. At least you are okay until the economy springs back, or things change in some way, offering more choices for us all. Many people with college degrees can't even find work in their field. It seems like nobody is hiring right now. I am a student of Interactive Media Design of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I haven't looked for work in my field yet, as far as a 'job' goes, anyway. What I am doing is getting myself used to the idea of working for myself. Besides, it's not that commerce has ended altogether; it's just going on at a much slower pace these days. I've found that with the determination to succeed, one kind make a way for oneself over time. The thing is you still need to pay your rent and keep your utilities running. It takes a steady paycheck to keep this going, and just to have the peace of mind to apply yourself to any new endeavor. Could anybody even continue with college without a roof over their head? I mentioned that I am a student, but I also work as a chef at Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods Market is a good company to work for. It hasn't had to close a store or make any drastic personnel cutbacks based on the status of the economy like many companies. One of the primary ideals of Whole Foods is a good working environment free of oppressive management and an open door policy. Another good thing about working for this company is the access to all kinds of organic and all natural foods and products. Most people don't realize how having a healthy diet can have an enormous effect on mental and emotional health. It's true. Imagine a 20% discount on all these goods like our personnel get. I must say I feel secure enough to work on working for myself now, since I have a steady paycheck to still my racing mind. You see, I worry about my future just like anybody else... Are you looking for work? Have you been laid off? Can you not find a job in your field of education right now due to the economy? Are you looking for a stress free place to work with positive human interaction? Please let me tell you about a few job opportunities that are almost always available at any Whole Foods Market. Maybe there is one in your city. The Prepared Foods Team: I know; food service... Let me tell you this: Other than a little hard work and creativity on my part, the deli has been a great place to work. The job itself is a constant training in progress that lasts. You can make sandwiches, pizzas, breakfast and lunch. You can have a hand at filling the chef's case filled with natural and organic salads our customers absolutely love. It's busy work, and you will not have time to think much about your troubles. Remember, everything you cook has to be sampled by you to make sure of its quality. It's great when customers admire me for my cooking abilities, even though it's not my career of choice. I was thinking of quitting and entering into a freelance web design career about a year ago. Now, I'm taking my time and doing it right. I must say that the stress free workplace and constantly sampling all natural and organic foods by right has helped make this not so bad at all, even with my ambitions. The Whole Body Team: You can learn a lot about the effects of vitamins and minerals in this department. I have talked with some of my friends and fellow employees in this department and have learned a lot. As an example, I had no idea that B vitamins could have such a positive effect on my mental state. Another stress free work environment, you get to offer educated advice to customers and give recommendations based on the training you get upon being hired. With much less physical labor than the Prepared Foods Department, it's perfect for moms out of work, and many that have worked there have moved on with positive attitudes, or have ended up making a career out of it. A lot of helpful, healthy information is acquired here. The Front End Team: Cashiering and bagging groceries. You have to remember that not one single employee at Whole Foods is paid less than $10 per hour. Together with 3 month evaluations and possible raises, it's not the worst place to bag groceries and cashier. Remember the open door policy and general healthy working environment. Remember the 20% discount for all employees. It can be a pleasant department to work in until you feel it's time to move on. I would like to mention the benefits of working for Whole Foods. We get PTO hours (Paid Time Off) that we can use when we need. If, let's say you only work 32 hours per week, you are allowed to cash in 8 hours of your time for one of your days off, if you have PTO hours to spend (As long as it doesn't take you into overtime.) So, it's as good as working an entire 40 hours if you have it that way. It can be used for when you are sick to make up the time you spend away without falling short of cash. There is a Personal Wellness Account (PWA) that I've been using to fix my teeth practically for free. Since I've worked for 2 years here, I was given $1500 every year to use on any health problems I might have. It might not sound like a lot, but it can be used with your insurance and on its own. Employees with less time on get less, and those with more time one get more, respectively. I wanted to add a positive addition to many people's job searches with this. In these tough times, it feels better to have a number of choices left. It might not last for long, but it can give one some breathing room. Remember that the policies are the same at every Whole Foods Market in the country. If any of this might work for you, please don't hesitate to apply. There are computers for just this at every location, and you don't have to even ask to use them. Good luck and be well! |
